# Use your own AI key (BYOK) with Waply AI agents in Kommo

By [Fernando Castillo](https://waply.online/about/#fernando-castillo), Founder of Waply

Updated: 2026-10-23

**BYOK lets your Waply AI agents run on your own AI provider key: six providers for messages, and only OpenAI and Grok for calls and voice.** It is available on AI 24/7 (text agents) and Voice AI (text and voice agents); Basic doesn't include it. You connect the key in Advanced settings, on the AI providers tab, where Waply validates it before saving it and stores it encrypted. Then each agent chooses Managed by Waply or one of your providers and models.

This guide is for teams on Kommo that want to use their own AI key with Waply agents. It goes deeper than the quick steps in the docs: what each plan includes, which providers work for messages and which for calls, how to connect a key and choose it on each agent, and what runs on it.

## BYOK in Waply: what it is and who it's for

BYOK (bring your own key) means your Waply AI agents run on an API key from your own AI provider account instead of on the AI that Waply supplies. You connect the key once in Waply, and each agent then chooses whether to use it.

- Plans: BYOK is on AI 24/7 (text agents) and Voice AI (text and voice agents). Basic has no AI agents and no BYOK.
- Messages: OpenAI, Grok, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral AI and DeepSeek.
- Calls and voice: only OpenAI and Grok.
- Billing: your provider bills the usage on your key, and Waply doesn't deduct AI credits for agents set to your provider.

It is for teams that already have a provider account, want to choose the provider and model of each agent, or want that usage to run under their own account. If you prefer not to manage a provider account, agents set to Managed by Waply work without any key.

## Which plan you need for BYOK

BYOK is included in the two AI plans; you don't buy it separately. Voice BYOK is only on Voice AI.

**BYOK by Waply plan**

| Plan | Your own key (BYOK) |
| --- | --- |
| Basic (USD 18 a month) | Not included: Basic has no AI agents |
| AI 24/7 (USD 39 a month) | Text agents (messages) |
| Voice AI (USD 89 a month) | Text agents and voice agents on calls |

## Providers: which work for messages and which for calls

For calls and voice agents, only OpenAI and Grok work. Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral AI and DeepSeek are available for messages only.

**Providers you can connect with your own key**

| Provider | Messages | Calls and voice |
| --- | --- | --- |
| OpenAI | Yes | Yes |
| Grok | Yes | Yes |
| Anthropic | Yes | No |
| Google Gemini | Yes | No |
| Mistral AI | Yes | No |
| DeepSeek | Yes | No |

The AI providers tab shows a Messages badge and, for OpenAI and Grok, a Calls badge on each provider row. On an agent, messages and voice are chosen separately, so you can use one provider for chats and another for calls. Available models change over time, so this guide doesn't list them: you see the current ones when you pick a model on the agent.

## Step by step: connect your key

These are the full steps; the docs page has the short version.

1. In Kommo, go to Settings > Waply, open Advanced settings and select the AI providers tab. You'll see one row per provider with its Messages and Calls badges and its status, such as Not connected.
2. On your provider's row, select Connect.
3. Paste your key in the API key field. It is the only field: there is no endpoint, organization or model to fill in.
4. Select Test and save. Waply validates the key with the provider before saving it; if the provider doesn't accept it or can't be reached, Waply tells you and the key is not saved.
5. Check that the row shows Connected and the last four characters of your key. The key is stored encrypted for your account and Waply never shows it in full.

The connection belongs to your account, not to a single agent, so every agent can use it. To replace a key, select Change key: the current key stays active until the new one is validated.

> Keep a copy of your key in your own password manager: after saving, Waply only shows its last four characters.

## Choose your provider on each agent

Connecting a key doesn't change your agents by itself. In the agent editor, each channel (messages and voice) has its own Provider selector.

- Provider: choose Managed by Waply or one of your connected providers. Only providers that are connected, have a valid key and support that channel appear in the list.
- Model: when you choose a provider, you then choose its model. Agents set to Managed by Waply choose a Simple or Advanced tier instead of a model.
- Publishing: Waply blocks publishing an agent whose chosen provider has no valid key and asks you to connect one first.
- Call agents: with your own provider (OpenAI or Grok), a call agent also needs a voice and a fallback Waply voice chosen before it can be published.

Because the choice is per agent and per channel, an agent left on Managed by Waply keeps using Waply's AI even when your account has a key connected.

> If you delete a key, agents that use that provider lose the connection and can't be published until a valid key is connected again.

## What runs on your key and what doesn't

**Parts of a Waply AI agent and your key**

| Part | Runs on your key? | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Agent text replies | Yes | With any of the six providers, on agents set to that provider. |
| Agent voice on calls (Voice AI) | Yes | Only with OpenAI or Grok. |
| Replies that use a knowledge base | Yes | Waply searches your knowledge base and the reply is generated by your provider, so it still runs on your key. |
| Audio message transcription | Only with OpenAI | Choose OpenAI as the transcription provider on the agent, with an OpenAI key connected. Otherwise Waply transcribes. |
| Call transcripts and summaries (call intelligence) | No | It is a plan feature with its own allowance and has no provider setting. |

For replies generated with your key, your provider bills the usage and Waply doesn't deduct AI credits. Agents set to Managed by Waply, and call intelligence, keep following your plan's allowances.

## When to use your own key and when to stay managed

### Choose BYOK if

- You already have an account with OpenAI, Grok, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral AI or DeepSeek and want to use it.
- You want to choose the provider and model of each agent.
- You want AI usage to appear in your own provider account.
- You use Voice AI and want your calls to run on OpenAI or Grok with your own key.

### Stay on Managed by Waply if

- You prefer not to create or maintain provider accounts and keys.
- You are happy choosing a Simple or Advanced tier instead of a model.

## Frequently asked questions

### Does Waply check my key before saving it?

Yes. When you select Test and save, Waply validates the key with the provider first. If the provider doesn't accept it or can't be reached, the key is not saved.

[Docs: providers and own keys](/docs/providers-own-keys/)

### Can I see my API key after saving it?

No. The key is stored encrypted for your account and Waply only shows its last four characters.

### Can one key serve messages, calls and audio transcription?

The connection is per provider and per account. One OpenAI key can power text replies, voice on calls and audio transcription, as long as you select OpenAI on each agent and channel. Grok serves text and calls; Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral AI and DeepSeek serve text only.

### Why can't I publish my agent?

If the agent uses one of your providers, Waply blocks publishing until that provider has a valid key connected. A call agent on your own provider also needs a voice and a fallback Waply voice chosen.

### Does my knowledge base work with my own key?

Yes. Waply searches your knowledge base and the reply that uses it is generated by your provider, so it runs on your key.

### Do I need my own key to use Waply AI agents?

No. Managed by Waply works without any key. Your own key is optional on AI 24/7 and Voice AI.
